Each group contains pieces with the same dimensions and weight. Measure the external dimensions, including packaging and the pallet. Enter dimensions in centimetres; use a comma or a point for decimals.

How to calculate cargo volume

For a rectangular cargo piece, multiply its external length, width and height. If the dimensions are in centimetres, divide the result by one million. Multiply by the number of identical pieces.

V = length × width × height × quantity / 1,000,000

For different dimensions, calculate each group separately and add the group volumes. This approach to CBM is described in the Freightos guide. CBM denotes volume in cubic metres.

Example: three pallets

Three packaged pieces measuring 120 × 80 × 150 cm have a geometric volume of 4.32 m³. If each weighs 300 kg including its pallet, the total gross weight is 900 kg.

Add one more crate measuring 100 × 100 × 100 cm and weighing 80 kg: the result is 4 pieces, 5.32 m³ and 980 kg. This is a worked calculation example, not a transport offer.

What to check when measuring

  • Measure each piece as it will be handed over: including the pallet, crating and any protruding packaging parts.
  • Do not count both a whole pallet and boxes already included in its dimensions: this would double the volume.
  • If dimensions or weights differ, add a separate group. Leave the weight blank if it is unknown.
  • For cylinders and irregular shapes, agree the measurement method with the carrier. This calculator uses the three external dimensions of a rectangular cargo piece.

Why volume alone is not enough to choose a vehicle

The same volume in m³ may require different amounts of vehicle space. Individual piece dimensions, stackability, loading access, securing and payload capacity all matter. The ratio of shipment volume to body volume does not confirm that the cargo will fit.

Add the collection and delivery addresses, product name, cargo ready date, stackability and any special conditions to the summary. Chargeable volume or weight, the scope of operations and price are agreed in the quotation for the specific shipment.
